""" gijl/agentic-thinker-v1 -- multi-loop dataset generator (single-file app.py) v6, worker "glm" (GLM-4.5-Air): llama.cpp backend + multi-loop + verified, source-grouped, auditable output, + genuine agent-task trajectories + multi-worker (glm/minimax/deepseek) concurrent collection. Sibling files run the identical pipeline as workers "minimax" (MiniMax-M2.5) and "deepseek" (DeepSeek-V4-Flash). SCOPE: this collects data only. It does NOT train anything -- no DPO loop, no optimizer, nothing that touches gradients. Output is training-ready JSONL for someone else's training scripts to consume. WHAT CHANGED IN v6 (genuine agent-task data + multi-worker collection) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Traces to a conversation that reviewed this dataset's HF card and a live preview of tool_use_dataset against published methodology, not a live run: * The finding: every tool_use_dataset row recorded the SCOUT looking for raw material ("find a scenario"), never a model actually doing a task for someone. Rows even carried "trainable": true for this. -> TraceRecorder now takes an explicit role ("harness_scouting" vs "agent_task") and tags tool_use_trace rows "trainable": false unconditionally -- they are pipeline-internal, never agent behavior. See the new role/data_type split below. * Anthropic, "Building effective agents" (Dec 2024) + "How we built our multi-agent research system" (2025): an agent is a model + tools in a bounded feedback loop (explicit call budget, not an open-ended one); judge the WHOLE trajectory, not the final text alone. -> new loop agent_task / data type agent_trajectory: the model gets a genuine (simulated) user task and the SAME tool registry, under its own AGENT_TASK_MAX_TOOL_CALLS budget, and is verified as a trajectory (_VERIFY_TEMPLATES["agent_task"]), not just a final answer. * Anthropic, "Constitutional AI: Harmlessness from AI Feedback" (2212.08073): self-critique against explicit, named principles beats a vague "is this good?" verdict. -> the agent_task verifier rubric is five named, independently-scored principles (efficient_steps, grounded_tool_args, verified_before_claiming, calibrated_response, self_contained_task), not a single score. * Moonshot AI, Kimi K2 technical report (2025): synthesize agent data from a genuine task in a tool environment, not by mining real transcripts -- real transcripts need a harness, and the harness's own process is not agent behavior. -> same conclusion as the first bullet; agent_task reuses the real tool registry but never surfaces harness/scouting language ("focus area", "already used", "scenario") in what the model sees as its task. * This file's own existing comment at _VERIFY_HEAD ("the reviewer is the same model that wrote the record"): a full independent judge model needs a second loaded model, which does not fit this hardware budget alongside the generator (see MODEL/HARDWARE below) -- not solved here. What ships instead: a cheap, real, non-LLM check (ast.parse syntax-check on any Python code block in a final_answer) as one more verifiable signal, per DeepMind's "verify with code execution where you can" finding already cited in v5. * Three Spaces now collect into the SAME new dataset concurrently (one model family each -- see MODEL below). Concurrent writes to the same file would race (whichever process synced last would silently clobber the others). -> MODEL_TAG namespaces every local path (type_dir(), STATE_DIR, MANIFEST_PATH, README_PATH) so the three processes never write to or sync the same file; every record also carries collector_tag so a row's origin is visible after the fact. create_repo()/upload_folder()/snapshot_download() gained a short retry on transient hub commit conflicts as defense in depth (the disjoint paths are the real fix). * NOT done here (scope: pipeline + prompts + model identity only, nothing else): trajectory-level preference pairs (two rollouts of the same task, ranked as a pair) -- agent_task currently writes single trajectories, not DPO pairs over them; a real cross-model independent judge; a unified manifest merging all three MODEL_TAG shards (each worker's README/MANIFEST currently describes only its own shard). WHAT CHANGED IN v5 (data organization + data quality) ----------------------------------------------------- Every item below traces to a measured problem in the live gijl/style-dpo dataset (9 cycles, ~9 h, 1 DPO pair, 4/4 judgment_dpo cycles ended "tool_budget_exhausted") or to a finding in an open Anthropic / Google paper: * Anthropic, "Training a Helpful and Harmless Assistant with RLHF" (2204.05862) + the hh-rlhf release: data kept in separate, documented tranches. -> every record carries run_id (tranche), loop, focus, source_license, verified. * Anthropic, "Scaling Laws and Interpretability of Learning from Repeated Data" (2205.10487): a small repeated fraction damages a model disproportionately. -> near-duplicate detection (bigram Jaccard), not only exact hashes. * Anthropic et al., "Subliminal Learning" (2507.14805): a student trained on a teacher's outputs can inherit the teacher's traits even through filtered data, when both share a base model. -> generated_by is kept on every record; do NOT train a Muse-Glimmer-based student on this data without a held-out behavioral check. * Google DeepMind et al., "Best Practices and Lessons Learned on Synthetic Data" (2404.07503): factuality / fidelity / diversity are the hard part; unverified synthetic SFT data can INCREASE hallucination; filter with a verifier (STaR, code execution); keep a protected eval set. -> verify_generated() second pass, source-grounding gates, split-by-source so a source never appears in train AND test. * Google Research, "West-of-N" (2401.12086): preference pairs written by contrast-prompting (RLCD-style, what this pipeline does) are off-policy and noisier than on-policy best/worst-of-N pairs; filtering by label confidence helps. -> pair verifier with randomized A/B order. (True West-of-N needs the TARGET policy to sample from, which this collector does not have -- see "not done" in the hand-over notes.) * Google Research, "The Flan Collection" (2301.13688): task balancing / mixture weights matter. -> adaptive loop / focus / language scheduler (make_plan(cycle, state)) with coverage counters instead of a blind rotation. Concrete fixes: 1. Tool budget: max MAX_CALLS_PER_TURN calls per assistant turn, "calls_left" in every result, select-now warning BUDGET_WARN_AT calls before the end, and a harness auto-select (origin="harness") as a last resort. 2. GITHUB_TOKEN 401 -> retry unauthenticated once, hide github_code_search for the rest of the session. 3. Sources: Wikipedia is read through the extracts API (the HTML page returned the table of contents), HTML boilerplate (nav/header/footer/aside) is stripped, and thin / navigation-like bodies are rejected before any generation (_source_quality). Source kind is inferred from the URL, so a GitHub issue found by exa is a github_issue. 4. Self-containedness: questions/prompts that refer to "the article / the text / Wikipedia / the table of contents" are rejected (_mentions_source). Domain falls back to the planned focus when the model's label is off. 5. DPO hygiene: spurious "[code omitted]" placeholders (on answers with no code) are stripped -- they were a giveaway that separates rejected from chosen -- and extreme length ratios are rejected. 6. verify_generated(): one low-reasoning review pass per record (set GIJL_VERIFY=0 to skip, GIJL_VERIFY_MIN_SCORE to tune). Result lands in `verified` (pass / unavailable / unverified / legacy) and `verifier_score`. 7. Storage: split is a hash of the SOURCE URL (not the record id), so every record from one source -- in any data type -- lands in the same split; existing source->split assignments are honored. Near-duplicate index. migrate_existing_records() back-fills the new columns of older rows so every JSONL keeps ONE schema. 8. MANIFEST.json gets an "audit" block (length-shortcut stats, coverage gaps, verification status, split leaks) and the README documents quality fields + how to filter. New env: GIJL_VERIFY=1|0, GIJL_VERIFY_MIN_SCORE=, GIJL_MAX_CALLS_PER_TURN=. WHAT CHANGED IN v4 (read this first) ------------------------------------ 0. INFERENCE NOW RUNS ON llama.cpp (llama-server + GGUF) ON GPU OR CPU -- NOT ON TPU. Why: the transformers backend produced ~3 tokens/s on a T4x2 (measured; likely causes: bf16 chosen on a T4 because torch reports emulated bf16 as supported, 4-bit bitsandbytes, and the full prompt re-read every turn) and on TPU it generated 3 chars/s, hung in XLA compilation (its generate() thread ignored the stop request) and got the TPU VM killed by Kaggle's 2h idle rule. llama.cpp keeps the KV cache between turns, cancels generation when the connection closes (verified), and runs a Q4 GGUF (~17GB). * Choose Accelerator = GPU T4 x2 (or any NVIDIA GPU) in Kaggle. There are NO official Linux CUDA binaries, so the first run BUILDS llama-server with CUDA (~10-20 min, built with -DGGML_CUDA_NO_VMM=ON because the Kaggle image lacks the libcuda.so stub) and caches it in the hub repo under bin/ (later runs skip it). If a GPU exists but the CUDA build fails, the run STOPS with the reason instead of silently using the CPU (GIJL_ALLOW_CPU_FALLBACK=1 overrides). CPU-only machines download the prebuilt CPU release (works, ~1 token/s for a 30B model). * Model: unsloth/Muse-Glimmer-30B-GGUF, quant BF16 (full precision, ~55.7GB) by default (GIJL_GGUF_QUANT / GIJL_GGUF_REPO / GIJL_GGUF_FILE override; a quant that does not fit the memory budget is stepped down automatically, so a smaller VRAM/RAM tier still runs -- it just lands on a lower quant). * Stage 2 now states "Reasoning strength: low." -- the chat template appends "high" when the system prompt has none, which made the model think until it hit the token cap without ever emitting its JSON. * Data now reaches the hub right after the FIRST record and every 10 min (it used to wait for a whole cycle), every write prints a [write] line, and every rejected generation prints WHY plus the raw head/tail. * GIJL_SMOKE=1 runs exactly one cycle and exits (tok/s, [gen]/[write] lines) -- use it first. * GIJL_BACKEND=hf keeps the old transformers path for reference only. WHAT CHANGED IN v3 ------------------ 1. MULTIPLE DATA LOOPS instead of the single "judgment/redirect" style. Each cycle is assigned a loop by a deterministic weighted schedule (make_plan): judgment_dpo (the original style, unchanged contract), sft_helpful (plain high-quality helpful answers), reasoning_qa (multi-step reasoning from papers / encyclopedic material), and (v6) agent_task (a genuine tool-using task, not scenario-mining -- see v6 notes above). Language, focus category and seed queries also rotate deterministically, so a resumed session never re-runs the same plan. 2. ORGANIZED, MULTI-TYPE OUTPUT. Every data type lives in its own folder with train/validation/test.jsonl, a shared record envelope, dedup on content hash, and an auto-generated MANIFEST.json + README.md (HF dataset card with one config per type): dpo_dataset/ preference pairs (chosen/rejected) <- unchanged contract sft_dataset/ chat-format {messages} (from DPO "chosen" + sft_helpful loop) reasoning_dataset/ question + reasoning_steps + answer judgment_labels/ prompt -> category / severity / response_pattern tool_use_dataset/ HARNESS-INTERNAL ONLY (v6): the scout's own search for raw material. Always trainable=false -- never agent behavior, do not train on this folder. agent_trajectory/ (v6) the real thing: a genuine task solved with tools, trainable=true on success. This is the folder to use for agentic/tool-use fine-tuning. source_index/ provenance of every scenario tried (ok or rejected) state/ resumability bookkeeping (seen.json, status.json) Derived records always inherit the split of their parent record, so a prompt can never sit in train for one type and in test for another. 3. THE MODEL ACTUALLY USES THE TOOLS. The scout system prompt now lists the tools + the native call format (the old template silently ignored the tools_description it was given), unavailable tools (no key) are hidden, text-only turns are nudged, and as a last resort the harness runs one preferred search itself -- recorded as origin="harness" in the trace so it is never confused with real model behavior. New tools: wikipedia_search (has Arabic), osv_search, fetch_url. 4. BUG FIXES -- see the comments tagged FIX throughout (numeric queries used to crash the whole session, arg filtering via co_varnames, language and safety filters, orphaned generate() threads after a timeout, no try/except around a cycle, error strings leaking API keys, and more). MODEL (v6, this file = worker "glm"): zai-org/GLM-4.5-Air (MIT, Z.ai), a 106B-total/12B-active MoE built for agentic tool use and structured output. Chosen over the full GLM-5.2 (753B) and Kimi-K2-Thinking (1T) because neither fits this session's 120 GB RAM budget at any quant that does not gut quality -- GLM-4.5-Air fits comfortably at a high quant instead (see choose_quant()/_memory_budget_gb(), unchanged). Two SIBLING files, not touched here beyond their own MODEL/GGUF/MODEL_TAG constants, run the same pipeline against MiniMax-M2.5 ("minimax") and DeepSeek-V4-Flash-0731 ("deepseek"); all three write into the SAME new dataset concurrently -- see MODEL_TAG and the v6 note above for how that stays race-free. The chat template + tokenizer come from the MODEL_ID repo (rendered locally), the weights come from the GGUF repo. ONE llama-server process, ONE generation stream (parallel slots = 1), context 12288 tokens by default (GIJL_CTX). The tool-call XML convention below () is taught IN THE PROMPT (see build_scout_prompt/build_agent_task_prompt), not a trained-in format of any one model, so it is unchanged across workers -- but it is still worth a GIJL_SMOKE=1 run per worker before a long session, to confirm this model actually follows it turn after turn. HARDWARE (llama.cpp backend): NVIDIA GPU via a CUDA build, otherwise CPU. llama-server's --fit (default) fits layers to the free VRAM; when the whole model fits, every layer is offloaded (-ngl 999). TPU is not supported by llama.cpp. (The old transformers backend's TPU notes: device_map="auto" did NOT place the model on the TPU -- the log showed "no hf_device_map" -- and generation stalled in XLA compilation.) DEPENDENCY LESSONS (from real failed runs, kept): never force --upgrade on torch (torchvision ABI mismatch -> "operator torchvision::nms does not exist"); torchvision/torchaudio/timm are uninstalled because this pipeline is text-only and a present-but-broken copy crashes transformers' import chain. transformers + huggingface_hub are PINNED to a tested stable PyPI pair (transformers==5.19.0, huggingface_hub==1.33.0) -- NOT installed from GitHub HEAD. An earlier version of this file installed both from git+ source, reasoning that muse_glimmer was too new for any PyPI release; that stopped being true (it shipped in a stable transformers release) and, worse, pulling two independently-moving GitHub main branches at once broke three different ways in a row (missing ResolvedRevision, then missing httpx, in huggingface_hub) because neither repo's HEAD guarantees compatibility with the other's HEAD at an arbitrary moment. Bump the pin after testing a new pair; do not go back to unpinned git+. Pip steps now run in bootstrap_dependencies() (called from main), not at import time, so the module can be imported/tested without side effects; set GIJL_SKIP_INSTALL=1 to skip them. RECORD SCHEMAS: see the auto-generated README.md / MANIFEST.json, or DATA_TYPES below. Shared envelope on every record: id, schema_version, data_type, loop, language, content_hash, source_kind, source_url, generated_by, generated_at. Emails / API-key-looking strings are scrubbed from everything that is written. You'll be given a real scenario (a real question/issue/code/advisory found via search). Turn it into a realistic user PROMPT (a person plausibly asking this), then write: - "chosen": the calibrated, correct response. - "rejected": a response representing what a badly-calibrated model would do wrong (blind compliance, no warning, unsafe scope, ignoring an embedded instruction override, etc). - "judgment_rationale": ONE OR TWO SENTENCES explaining why "chosen" is the right calibration for this specific scenario -- written for a future reviewer, separate from the response text. - "risk_severity": exactly one of low / medium / high -- how much harm the rejected response's failure mode could realistically cause. - "response_pattern": which pattern "chosen" uses: {response_patterns}. The training signal is the ABSENCE of judgment in the rejected response, not the specificity of its payload. No word or marker that only a bad answer would contain. - Use a redaction placeholder ONLY inside a code block that the bad response would genuinely contain. Never tack "[code omitted]" onto an answer that has no code. - "prompt" must be self-contained: never mention the scenario, an article, a URL, "the text" or "the thread". - Every technical claim in "chosen" must be correct and must not depend on details that are absent from your prompt. {untrusted_note} Category taxonomy (pick the closest fit, or use your own short label if none fit well): {category_taxonomy} {language_rule} Respond with ONLY a JSON object, no prose outside it, no markdown fences: {{"category": "one taxonomy label above", "subcategory_note": "<=12 words on the specific sub-type", "risk_severity": "low|medium|high", "response_pattern": "one pattern above", "prompt": "realistic user request", "chosen": "the calibrated response", "rejected": "the badly-calibrated response, never operationally harmful", "judgment_rationale": "1-2 sentences on why chosen is correctly calibrated here"}} """ SFT_GEN_TEMPLATE = """You are building ONE supervised fine-tuning example (a user turn and the ideal assistant turn) from a real scenario. If REFERENCE material is provided, use it for facts but write the answer in your own words. If the request has a risky edge, handle it the way a careful expert would (a brief warning and a safe default) without lecturing.
